ICON Dashboard
The ICON Dashboard is a new way to access your ICON courses. It quickly shows you which courses have updates (unread discussions, new quizzes, etc.)
Tell us your impressions! What should we add? What should we change?

I’m sorry to hear you feel that way!
We designed the new ICON Dashboard with simplicity in mind, in part because the old interface was confusing for many people — our help desk receives a lot of calls about this, at the beginning of each semester.
We’ll keep looking for ways to simplify, and looking for feedback on things we can improve. This forum has already been the source for many improvements.
You can find the link to the old ICON homepage at the bottom of the dashboard (see: https://icon.uiowa.edu/support/dashboard/#semesters)

option to permanently choose the old homepage as the starting page
I like the old home page MUCH better. It would be great if there was a way to choose that as the default that shows up when i log in. Instead, I have to go through dashboard and click the link to go to the "old homepage."
Plus, I am a "course builder" for a course and I can't access that anywhere except on the old homepage. It's not an option for me to go to on the dashboard homepage.

Dashboard Sucks
The Dashboard is cluttered and irritating. It only shows the current semesters classes on login. The old homepage was as easy as could be. Everything was ordered by semester and I could access any class from any semester easily and quickly. Why fix something that isn't broken?

View files submitted by professors as PDFs
Tech savvy professors already convert their read-only documents to pdf. However, many documents meant to be read-only are submitted as read/write files. It would also make viewing easier as most pdf readers include plugins for popular browsers. I am suggesting that there be an option (i.e. checkbox) when professors are posting documents. An option because some files need to be edited by the viewer.

Thanks for the suggestion! This forum is mostly about the Dashboard; the course content area is run by software from a commercial vendor, so we don’t have direct control over it. But your suggestion is a good one; we’ll definitely pass it on to the vendor.
In the meantime, If you have specific concerns about the type of files (including file format and permissions) your instructor is uploading to ICON, I suggest you talk with them. They can call the help desk if they need advice or assistance converting to PDF.

Cant eliminate updates
The only problem I have with Icon is that once the new updates are visible there is no way to check off that you have seen them without actually going to them. Classes at the beginning of the year have so many updates that it is annoying to go though and open every item to get rid of the new items.

There are two types of updates — some fall off when you take a specific action (unread discussion board posts, new quizzes and dropboxes, new content items). Others just show as “recent” (course news items, wiki edits or comments).
We leave the “recent” items up for 2 weeks, basically because we can’t tell whether you’ve seen them or not. We could handle them other ways; e.g., recent course news could be marked as read if you’ve been to the course homepage at all. Would that help? Comments are welcome…

The new dashboard has potential, but it needs some changes.
For starters, why is each class listed twice? For example:
027:130:001 Spr10 Human Physiology
Main Site - 027:130:001 Spr10 Human Physiology
The first is bold and not linked, the second is linked. It doesn't make sense to list classes like that and creates more clutter to go through. My suggestion is to just list each class once and link that.
I like the idea of posting on the dashboard when new things are posted in each class, but I don't like that when I view the "new" news(thereby making it "old" news) it is not reflected on the dashboard. It… more33 votesplanned ·

Thanks for the feedback.
The short answer is you’re right; the apparent double-listing is confusing for some people, so we’re working to simplify it.
The longer answer is that we wanted room for more than one link; the Dashboard lets instructors add other types of resources besides the standard ICON site. Currently, instructors can add a wiki on http://wiki.uiowa.edu/ (the Dashboard handles permissions, authentication, and updates) or a link to a generic external course site, which is common for some departments. We hope to add more tools in the future; all of those links are listed underneath the course title.
For students with only standard ICON sites, though, this is not at all obvious. For courses that don’t need space to link to a wiki, or an external site, or some other resource, we should be able to simplify the display. We’re working on it!

Making it easier to find the class.
I think it would look better and make it easier to quickly find the class you want if instead of it saying something like
004:012:00A Fall09 Principles of Chemistry II
Main Site - 004:012:00A Fall09 Principles of Chemistry II
It says Principles of Chemistry II 004:012:00A Fall 09
Principles of Chemistry II 004:012:00A - Main Site.
Seeing things like "Main Site, Fall 09, or the course number" before the name of the class makes it harder to get to the page and just click. I feel like I have to read it first instead of just being able to quickly… more

Thanks for the suggestion.
I’m not sure we’ll be able to do exactly what you’re asking; instructors can alter the way the course title is displayed, so it might not be reliable for us to take it apart and put it back together in a different order. But we’ll definitely look into it.

Give the option of permanently reverting to the old style
The new style, yes it works alright. But the load time is slow, even on my Win7 x64 i5 computer that is less than two weeks old. That same desktop will run AutoCAD seamlessly and has all IE8 add-ons disabled in compatibility mode. There is no such slow down on other sites. Long story short, please make the page load more efficiently or give us the option of reverting to the "old homepage" permanently as other commenters have said.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble.
We’ve done a lot of performance testing, but I tested again after seeing your comment, both from on- and off-campus networks. I compared the speed of loading the Dashboard vs. the older “my home” screen.
The speed was nearly identical for a student with lots of courses (7) and for a student with fewer courses (2), the Dashboard was about 1/3 faster.
If you’re consistently seeing slower performance on the Dashboard, there may be some problem with your account, or something else we haven’t considered. Feel free to add more detail to the comments here, or contact the helpdesk (384-4357 or icon-support@uiowa.edu) and we’ll try to sort it out.

abandon dashboard. It's not actually useful.
I don't see what dashboard is supposed to do; this seems to introduce another level of confusion to a system that is already constantly changing and not particularly user-friendly.
As an instructor, the constant changes that are made each semester make ICON daunting, and not worth my time to use. I can make my own webpage for my course more efficiently through other avenues (and I do).

Incorporate ICON, ISIS, and Hawkmail into one site.
From what I can tell, there is no good reason I need to log in to ISIS, ICON, and Hawkmail. ISIS has next to no information, and Hawkmail is a tar pit; it's impossible to navigate away from it without pressing the back button.

Dental Students
Dental students have classes that go from the Fall until the Summer. These classes aren't on the Dashboad. To access one has to go to My Home.

You’re right; some courses, especially in Dentistry and GIS, run well into Spring even though they technically belong to the Fall semester.
We’re looking at ways to detect these based on the course start and end dates, which can be separate from the semester start and end.
The Dashboard should always show you the courses you are working in right now, regardless of which semester they belong to. We’re maybe 95% there, but still working on improvements!

Course grades updates on the main page
I would like to see on the main page when there are any new quizzes, tests, or homework grades for the course.

You’re right, it would be great to log in and see something like “2 newly posted grades” next to one of your courses.
We’ll take a look at how to do this. I’m sure it’s possible, but I have to warn you, it may take a little while.

Implement RSS feeds for course updates
Why do I need to log in to ICON for every little detail? Can you set up authorized RSS feeds for the news items? Other options might be for new discussion topics, new test grades posted, etc.

Hire a designer to fix the entire design of ICON
your new landing page is a terrible design. We have an entire art department that would be able to design something better. I do like the notifications for each class. But each class is too far apart. It looks like you just designed a new landing page and slapped it on top of the old one.
I suggest you start from scratch and design something completely new.5 votes -
